A reader who wishes only to be identified as “The Stik” has sent in these photos of what is obviously the new Perodua SUV to be launched sometime in May 2008, replacing the Perodua Kembara. This trailer carrying a few covered up cars was spotted on Sunday on the Federal Highway. The new Perodua will have a 1.5 liter engine and 4WD.
The new SUV will likely get a new name even though it replaces the Kembara in its product range, and will also be the vehicle that launches Perodua’s new branding, as mentioned by Perodua MD Syed Hafiz in an interview with The Edge earlier.
From these photos, we can confirm that the new Kembara replacement Perodua SUV will be based on the Toyota Rush/Daihatsu Terios. No other detail is revealed other than the alloy wheel design which looks like a 5-spoke design as opposed to the Toyota Rush’s 6-spoke design.
Unlike all of Perodua’s current vehicles which are locally assembled, the new Perodua SUV will be fully imported from Japan and will positioned higher than its Indonesian-import Toyota Rush sibling in terms of pricing.

Camry With aerokit

Toyota is now offering the Toyota Camry in a new colour and with a new aerokit, of which both is shown above. The new colour is called White Pearl CS (070), with CS being an acronym for crystal. The new colour is only offered on the Toyota Camry 2.0G and the Toyota Camry 2.4V. Specifying this colour will cost an extra RM800.
As for the new Toyota Camry aerokit, it can be fitted on all models and all colours, but only as a factory-fit. Aftermarket retrofitting for existing Toyota Camry owners is not possible as Toyota says it will tamper with the vehicle’s original specifications as approved by Toyota Motor Co Japan. The aerokit is optional and costs RM2,200. It consists of a front lip, a rear lip, side skirts and a trunk lid spoiler. Warranty for the aerokit follows the Camry’s 3 year or 100,000km warranty.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd plans to launch the replacement for it’s C-segment Toyota Corolla Altis sedan sometime next year, a re-entry of sorts into the current C-segment sedan market dominated by the Honda Civic 1.8S and 2.0S.
The replacement for the Toyota Corolla Altis - called just the Corolla sedan in Europe - made it’s European debut in December 2006 at the 2006 Helsinki Motor Show shortly after it’s world debut at the 2006 Beijing Motor Show. This is not the same car as the Toyota Corolla Axio and Corolla Fielder launched in Japan earlier, as that one is a smaller car than the one we are going to get.
The new car’s silver and dark grey interior takes a leaf out of Volvo’s book with a classy-looking thin floating console, and the new meter and display panel backlighting is of an goldish-orange hue similiar to the Toyota Auris.
The C-segment sedan market currently offers cars with either 1.8 liter or 2.0 liter engines, a step up from the current Altis’s 1.6 and 1.8 liter. Under the hood of the 1.8 liter variant of the new Toyota Corolla Altis will most probably be the 136hp new Dual VVT-i 1.8 liter 2ZR-FE, which replaces the current Corolla Altis’ 1.8 liter 1ZZ-FE VVT-i engine, as this new engine has been used for the new Toyota Corolla launched in the Australia market.
If UMW Toyota decides to offer a 2.0 liter variant here, the engine could be the 2.0 liter 3ZR-FE Dual VVT-i engine making 143 PS, but if we’re really lucky we could get the Valvematic 3ZR-FAE which makes 158 PS at 6,200rpm - this would make the Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0 liter Valvematic the most powerful 2.0 liter C-segment sedan in it’s class, something Toyota could shout about in it’s marketing campaigns. The more advanced variable valve timing and lift technologies in this new family of engines will also help the car be more fuel efficient.
Bear in mind if somehow cost-cutting takes precedence over state of the art, we might just end up with the 1AZ-FE (making 152hp in it’s highest state of tune, like in the 3rd generation RAV4 for example) being dumped into the 2.0 liter’s engine bay, the same engine in the 2.0 liter Toyota Wish and the 2.0 liter Toyota Camry. But I don’t think this is very likely as it wouldn’t make sense for the 1.8 liter model to have a more advanced engine than the flagship 2.0 liter, so the 3ZR-FE Dual VVT-i without Valvematic is the minimum. Of course, the worst case scenario would be no 2.0 liter model at all.

New Perodua Kembara replacement mid 2008

Perodua managing director Datuk Syed Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar indicated in a report by The Edge that we will see the launch of the new Perodua Kembara replacement model this year. The new Kembara will logically be based on the new Daihatsu Bego/Toyota Rush, and Perodua targets modest sales of about 300 units per month as they are going to focus on the Viva instead. The Kembara will not be a high volume seller for them.
Just a recap - the Daihatsu Bego or Toyota Rush that the new Perodua Kembara replacement is expected to be based on is powered by a 1.5 liter DVVT engine, similiar to the unit in the Toyota Avanza 1.5. It has a full time all wheel drive system. It first appeared as a concept car called the Daihatsu D-Compact 4X4 Concept.

*Perodua to undertake rebranding exercise* PERUSAHAAN Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), Malaysia's top carmaker, intends to maintain its lead in the domestic market for the third year in a row by pushing up sales, introducing at least one improved model and rebranding the company.
Rebranding will take place this year, aimed at making the company's name more visible.
"For some time and until today, our product brands such as Kancil and MyVi stand out more prominently than our corporate name, Perodua. We intend to change that situation," Perodua managing director Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar told Business Times via e-mail.
The rebranding, which will coincide with its 15th anniversary, will begin in June this year and is due to run until next year. Changes will revolve around Perodua's new brand vision and tag line, "Fresh Thinking To Move Malaysia".
"A strong brand is a powerful tool to help us find and keep the best employees. This will help us maintain our leadership position," Syed Abdull Hafiz added.
Perodua dethroned Proton Holdings Bhd as the country's top carmaker in 2005, with an overall share of 40 per cent of the passenger car market.
"Our focus this year is to retain our pole position in the domestic car market for the third consecutive year," said Syed Abdull Hafiz.
Perodua expects a marginal increase of 1.8 per cent in car sales to 165,000 units this year from 162,152 units in 2007, on the back of a highly competitive and saturated domestic car market.
This will account for 32 per cent of the total industry volume, which Perodua projects to grow to 510,000 units, compared with a 33.3 per cent share of the 487,000 units sold in 2007.
Apart from banking on existing models to drive its sales, Perodua has plans to launch a new four-wheel drive Kembara replacement model later this year, with much higher specifications.
Perodua's last put out a new model in May 2007, when it unveiled the Viva, a compact 1.0-litre car that sells from RM28,400. The Viva was Perodua's first new model in two years when it was released.
As at December 2007, Perodua sold some 50,000 units of the Viva and more than 200,000 units of the Myvi.
"Our plan is to launch one new model every year, starting with the MyVi in 2005. However, the strong demand and long waiting period (for MyVi) had temporarily derailed our plans in 2006," said Syed Abdull Hafiz.
"Our plan is now back on track and we are working towards launching a new model each year over the next three years," he said.
Perodua is also expecting an increase in its after-sales business this year. It targets to service 1.3 million Perodua cars this year, up from 1.12million in 2007.
The group's plant in Sg Choh, Rawang, has the capacity to make 240,000 cars per year, which Syed Abdull said will be sufficient to meet the demand up to 2011.
The company also assembles Toyota's Avanza model and the Daihatsu Sirion, meant for the Indonesian market.
On its partnership with Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd and Mitsui & Co Ltd of Japan, Syed Abdull Hafiz said it has "proven that such partnership can work if both parties have mutual respect and trust as well as set out clear goals from the beginning".
On another front, Syed Abdull Hafiz said the challenges for Perodua and other local automotive players include the intense competition in the market, spiralling crude oil prices and volatile foreign exchange.
He said more companies will launch competitively-priced cars. "For Perodua, we will continue to focus on building quality compact cars that are competitively priced," he said, adding that the US economy and its subprime lending crisis, and fear of recession could also affect the domestic car market.
On the positive side, the higher pump prices for fuel could benefit Perodua as car buyers opt for more fuel-efficient and economical car to maintain," said Syed Abdull Hafiz.

MOTOSIKAL moden kini selalunya mempunyai penanda aras kehausan pelapik brek untuk memudahkan kita mengetahui tahap ketebalan pelapik brek yang berbaki. Namun, pengesanan ketika membrek dapat memberi amaran awal pembaharuan pelapik atau brek.
Brek yang sudah haus lazimnya terasa lebih rendah atau memerlukan tarikan tuil brek lebih banyak dan tekanan jauh untuk brek kaki.
Bagi sistem brek hidraulik pula seperti sesetengah motosikal kini sistem brek yang rosak mungkin boleh dirasai jika tuil brek terasa ‘lembut’ dan seperti span (spongy) apabila ditarik.
Lakukanlah pemeriksaan tuil brek motosikal. Selalunya ini berlaku jika getah dalam pam brek sudah keras dan tidak berfungsi dengan baik.
Bendalir brek digunakan perlulah sesuai dengan dinyatakan pada penutup tangki cecair brek.
Jangan gunakan bendalir brek lebih rendah dari tahap ditetapkan seperti menggunakan bendalir DOT 3 untuk pam DOT 4.
Jangan campur bendalir brek anda, selalunya ia diwarnakan biru, merah atau jernih.
Ia boleh menyebabkan pengembangan dan kerosakan pada getah pam brek anda.

MOTOSIKAL kini selalunya mempunyai penanda kehausan rantai pada hujung gandar atau axle belakang.
Apabila anda melaras rantai, perhatikan tanda berkenaan atau jika tiada tanda, memadai dengan memerhatikan sama ada skru pelaras habis dipusing tetapi rantai masih kendur, maka tukarlah rantai anda.
Satu lagi tanda kehausan rantai ialah ia tidak lagi sama muat dengan gegancu (sprocket) anda.
Tegangkan rantai dan cuba gerakkan rantai itu di gegancu, jika longgar tandanya rantai haus dan perlu ditukar.
Ini kerana rantai memanjang apabila lama digunakan (stretched). Cara mudah memahami keadaan ini ialah dengan mengambil seutas rantai baru dan pasangkan pada sebuah gegancu baru.
Anda dapati rantai itu sama muat dengan gegancu baru tanpa sebarang kelonggaran. Rantai ini yang memindahkan kuasa menarik jentera dan berat anda sendiri ketika bergerak di jalan raya. Bayangkan tenaga tarikan yang dilalui rantai anda.
Penjagaan rantai agak mudah, pastikan rantai sentiasa berminyak dan tidak kering. Jika rantai kering, ia cepat panas dan cepat haus, begitu juga gegancu (sprocket). Secara amnya, ada dua jenis rantai, iaitu rantai biasa dan rantai dilengkapi ‘O-ring’ yang lazim digunakan motosikal berkuasa tinggi dan perlumbaan.
Rantai ‘O-ring’ memerlukan minyak khas sesuai untuk kegunaan rantai kerana minyak yang tidak sesuai menyebabkan ia menjadi kembang dan membocorkan gris dalam rantai itu.
Sentiasa minyakkan rantai anda dengan minyak bersih; minyak hitam mungkin mengandungi bahan logam haus dari enjin.
Rantai yang berminyak mudah menjadi kering selepas perjalanan meredah hujan, oleh itu jadikanlah amalan menyapu minyak rantai selepas hujan.
Bersihkan rantai jika selepas melalui jalan yang berhabuk, kerana debu jalanan melekat pada rantai mempercepatkan kehausan serta memendekkan usia rantai dan gegancu anda.
Adalah menjadi amalan yang baik untuk menukarkan set rantai dan gegancu secara serentak, usahlah cuba berjimat dengan menukar rantai tanpa menukar gegancu ataupun sebaliknya.
Ini kerana padanan rantai dan gegancu tidak diperoleh dan akhirnya menyebabkan jangka hayat keduanya menjadi jauh lebih pendek dan merugikan.
Rantai yang memanjang melebihi had juga perlu ditukar, adalah amalan yang tidak digalakkan memotong rantai dan menyambungnya semula, 'penjimatan' ini mungkin menyebabkan anda terpaksa menolak motosikal apabila rantai putus sewaktu menunggang.
Ada juga sistem minyak rantai automatik seperti 'Scott-Oiler' namun ia membabitkan belanja permulaan besar sekitar RM600 dan selalunya digunakan motosikal berkuasa tinggi.
Dari segi ekonomi ia memanjangkan usia rantai, ada yang mencapai 60,000km sebelum perlu menukar rantai baru.
Rantai yang haus tidak perlu menunggu pecutan untuk putus ada rantai yang putus sewaktu baru memasuki gear satu untuk bergerak.
Sentiasa memeriksa rantai dan pastikan operasinya licin dan senyap apabila memusingkan tayar belakang.
Rantai yang kering atau rosak selalunya berdesing atau tersangkut. Jika ianya tersangkut, periksa dulu pin sambungan rantai atau setiap sambungan dan minyakkan. Jika ini tidak menyelesaikan masalah anda sudah sampai waktunya rantai ditukar baru.

MASALAH bunyi bising lebih tinggi daripada kebiasaan bagi jentera anda bergantung kepada banyak faktor.
Dengan mengandaikan kebisingan merujuk kepada bunyi daripada enjin, lazimnya terjadi apabila ia sudah meningkat usia dan bahagian berkenaan mengalami kehausan.
Namun, ini bergantung kepada tahap kehausan dialami, sama ada masih dalam julat spesifikasi kehausan boleh diterima pakai untuk prestasi enjin memuaskan atau tidak.
Selalunya pusat servis bertauliah mengukur tahap kehausan sesuatu bahagian enjin itu sama ada ia masih dalam julat boleh diterima. Jika tidak, bahagian yang haus ini diganti dengan alat ganti yang baru untuk memastikan prestasi enjin baik.
Kehausan bahagian bergerak enjin juga secara amnya bergantung kepada penggunaan minyak pelincir sesuai dan penukaran minyak enjin menepati jadual penukaran.
Janganlah berjimat dalam mengikut jadual penukaran minyak pelincir anda kerana ia amalan yang tidak ekonomik sebenarnya.
Minyak pelincir ibarat darah kepada enjin dan jika ia kotor mendatangkan pelbagai 'penyakit' yang tidak diundang.
Penggunaan minyak lebih pekat atau tinggi tahap kelikatan boleh menyelesaikan masalah bunyi bising pada enjin memandangkan banyak bahagian yang haus dan longgar pada enjin berusia.
Malah, ada bahan tambahan dijual di pasaran yang dapat memendam bunyi bising enjin, namun ia kurang sesuai untuk enjin motosikal yang rata-rata menggunakan sistem klac terendam minyak (wet clutch).
Ia boleh digunakan melainkan beberapa jenama dan model motosikal tertentu menggunakan klac kering (dry clutch) atau kotak gear berasingan iaitu minyak pelincir dan minyak adalah terpisah.
Lazimnya menggunakan bahan penambah mungkin menyebabkan prestasi yang menurun bagi enjin klac basah kerana ia menambahkan tahap kelicinan minyak pelincir dan mungkin menyebabkan klac tergelincir (clutch-slipping) terutama sekali sewaktu pecutan dan pada RPM tinggi.

4)Gear 5 hilang kuasa
SAYA mempunyai motosikal RG Sports keluaran 1995. Ketika berada dalam dalam gear lima, enjin seperti kehilangan kuasa. Pada gear empat, motosikal boleh mencapai 100km/j dan apabila masuk gear lima kelajuan berkurangan ke 80km/j walaupun memulas minyak sepenuhnya. Apakah masalah yang berlaku?

JENTERA yang sebu seperti ini selalunya menjurus kepada pelarasan karburetor yang kurang tepat dan enjin tidak dapat mengeluarkan kuasa sepatutnya.
Campuran bahan api menjadi terlalu mewah dan membasahi palam pencucuh ketika berada dalam gear teratas.
Ia gear yang menjana beban tertinggi kepada enjin dan menyebabkan bahan api tidak dapat dibakar sepenuhnya serta mengakibatkan kehilangan kuasa.
Namun, kebocoran mampatan disebabkan kehausan gelang piston dan piston tidak boleh diketepikan.
Malah, masalah percikan api kecil menyebabkan enjin menjadi kurang berkuasa. Enjin yang mati di pertengahan jalan boleh berpunca daripada sebab di atas.
Penelitian yang menyeluruh oleh mekanik berpengalaman perlu untuk mengenal pasti masalah sebenar malah cara atau perkara berlaku sebelum enjin mati dapat memberikan panduan untuk mengenal pasti punca masalah sebenar.

5)Kemalangan selepas brek kecemasan
BARU-BARU ini, saya kemalangan selepas motosikal Yamaha 135LC saya tunggang melakukan brek kecemasan. Hasil pertanyaan saya terhadap ramai pengguna model yang sama mendapati tayar belakang motosikal ini memang membuang ketika brek kecemasan dilakukan walaupun pada kelajuan perlahan iaitu 40 hingga 50km/j.
Adakah ini masalah dari segi rekaan teknikal atau saya perlu menukar spesifikasi tayar berbeza untuk mengelakkan kejadian yang sama berulang?

JAWAPAN
DARI sesi tunggangan dan ujian yang dijalankan sebelum ini masalah berkenaan tidak pula dihadapi. Malahan ujian brek kecemasan didapati berkesan dan motosikal ini dikawal dengan selesa. Sebenarnya, penggunaan brek dengan betul dapat membantu kita mengawal reaksi motosikal apabila memerlukan pemberhentian segera.
Mungkin tidak disedari ramai antara kita gemar menggunakan brek belakang secara lebih kerap dan kuat pada kebiasaannya. Penggunaan brek sukar hendak ditetapkan pembahagian kuasa membrek kerana ia bergantung kepada kelajuan, situasi dan keadaan jalan raya pada waktu itu.
Namun begitu, brek hadapan perlu diberikan keutamaan dan lebih kuasa untuk pemberhentian motosikal dengan baik. Sebab itu jugalah kita perhatikan lazimnya sistem brek hadapan lebih maju dan berteknologi tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan brek belakang.
Keadaan tayar belakang membuang selalunya terjadi apabila lebih tekanan diberikan kepada brek belakang menyebabkan ia terkunci dan hilang kawalan jika kita terus menekan brek. Apa yang boleh dilakukan dalam keadaan seperti itu ialah melepaskan tekanan pada brek belakang sekejap, sebelum menekan semula, untuk mendapatkan balik kawalan motosikal.
Berbalik kepada kebiasaan tadi, ini selalunya terjadi apabila kita sudah terlalu terbiasa dengan pembahagian kuasa brek seperti itu, iaitu melebihkan kuasa brek di belakang.
Pada waktu kecemasan, kita tidak sempat lagi untuk memikirkan tindakan kita dan lazimnya bertindak balas mengikut kebiasaan dan pengalaman.
Maka dengan itu, pengalaman saja dapat membantu ketika cemas. Lakukan latihan kawalan brek dengan kerap bagi membantu kita untuk menimba pengalaman dan membina ingatan tindak balas yang mungkin menyelamatkan nyawa kita satu hari nanti.

6)Semput apabila pecut 80km/j
MOTOSIKAL TZM saya semput apabila mencecah kelajuan antara 80 hingga 100 km/j terutama apabila memecut.

DALAM keadaan biasa, choke yang digunakan pada waktu pagi ‘mencekik’ karburetor iaitu mengurangkan kadar kemasukan udara dan sekali gus meningkatkan kadar bahan api yang masuk.
Ini memudahkan penghidupan enjin ketika ia masih sejuk. Campuran bahan api menjadi lebih mewah apabila choke digunakan.
Choke yang tidak dilepaskan menyebabkan overflow dalam kebuk pembakaran dengan palam pencucuh menjadi basah dan enjin mungkin sebu atau mati.
Sekiranya ini tidak berlaku walaupun choke tidak dilepaskan bermakna penalaan karburetor anda tidak tepat dan campuran bahan api yang ideal hanya dapat diperoleh apabila choke ditarik.
Laraskan semula karburetor untuk mendapatkan campuran tepat. Tidaklah mustahil jika anda mendapati ada motosikal yang bergerak dengan choke ditarik sepenuhnya.
Jetting yang paling sesuai ialah jetting standard yang mampu memberikan prestasi dan penjimatan penggunaan bahan api.
Cuma, kadangkala tanpa kita sedari, jetting itu haus sedikit walaupun tidak kelihatan pada mata kasar.
Untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini jarum karburetor perlu dilaras ke atas atau ke bawah bagi mendapatkan prestasi memuaskan mengikut kehendak penunggang.
Kehilangan kuasa boleh terjadi pada jentera yang sudah hilang kuasa mampatannya iaitu piston atau piston ring sudah haus serta enjin memerlukan lebih bahan api untuk membolehkan ia beroperasi.
Ini menyebabkan penggunaan bahan api tinggi dan merugikan. Adalah lebih ekonomik untuk membaik pulih enjin (overhaul).
Ia mungkin juga disebabkan powervalve bocor atau tidak dilaras baik. Power valve yang kerap bocor menyebabkan kehilangan kuasa pada enjin.
Power valve ini beroperasi pada suhu tinggi dan dengan kehadiran minyak pelincir 2T, kadangkala terdapat saki- baki karbon perlu dicuci atau dikikis untuk membersihkannya sebelum dipasang dengan pelapik yang baru.
Pengikisan ini kadangkala menyebabkan permukaannya terhakis dan menjadi tidak rata atau serasi lagi, ini menyebabkan kebocoran walaupun ditukar baru.
Permukaan komponen power valve mungkin melengkung sedikit kerana haba panas dan menyebabkan kebocoran.
Cuba pasang pelapik baru menggunakan sedikit bahan gasket cecair yang dikhaskan untuk penggunaan ekzos.
Bahan ini ada dijual di kedai ekzos kereta kerana motosikal jarang menggunakannya. Awas apabila menggunakannya kerana bahan ini selalunya mengandungi asbestos yang boleh memudaratkan kesihatan.
Sapukan dengan rata dan pasang pelapik baru dan biarkan ia kering secukupnya selama semalaman jika boleh sebelum menghidupkan enjin.
Jika powervalve anda masih bocor selepas ini mungkin ia perlu ditukar baru kerana permukaannya rosak.

7)Motor alami gegaran kuat
MOTOSIKAL saya mengalami masalah gegaran kuat apabila memecut dari 100km/j ke 120km/j.
Apakah yang menyebabkan gegaran? Sebelum ini saya pernah kemalangan. Adakah ini kerana gegaran enjin?

JAWAPAN
SELALUNYA enjin yang beroperasi baik, gegaran akan berlaku seandainya tahap melahu (idle) enjin terlalu rendah.
Bergantung kepada apa anda maksudkan dengan timing, penurunan timing yang mengakibatkan kurangnya gegaran mungkin membayangkan timing enjin anda terlalu lambat (retarded) dan pemasaan percikan api di palam pencucuh agak lambat dan tidak menepati pemasaan yang diperlukan.
Ini akan menyebabkan operasi enjin tidak lancar dan enjin akan bergegar. Gegaran ini akan hilang bila pendikit dipulas, kerana rpm enjin meningkat. Timing perlu dibuat dengan tepat untuk memastikan enjin berada dalam keadaan optimum.
Gegaran dialami pada semua julat gear pula membayangkan sesuatu yang tidak kena pada bahagian yang digunakan pada semua gear, sama ada gear utama atau klac.
Namun, jangan lupa enjin yang kurang baik dan tenaga juga memberikan petanda sama jika gegalas utama haus atau mengalami kelonggaran. Ini menyebabkan gegaran yang amat terasa, malahan selalunya gegaran sewaktu penunggangan terjadi disebabkan enjin dan bukan datang dari kekotak gear.
Perlu dipastikan dari mana punca gegaran itu terlebih dulu untuk mendapatkan jawapan, tetapi boleh juga dibuat andaian dengan menghidupkan motosikal anda dan memulas pendikit untk meningkatkan rpm.
Lazimnya jika gegaran itu disebabkan enjin, ia akan terasa pada gear neutral dan rpm yang tinggi. Satu cara lagi yang agak mudah ialah dengan membandingkan tahap gegaran enjin anda dengan motosikal rakan sewaktu melakukan ujian ini.
Gegaran tayar boleh juga terjadi kerana kerosakan pada rim, galas (bearing) tayar yang haus dan juga galas stereng yang terletak pada tengkuk motosikal anda.
Keseimbangan tayar perlu diperiksa semula jika didapati tayar masih bergegar kerana keseimbangan atau penjajaran tayar boleh hilang jika ia mengalami pelanggaran lopak jalan terutama menggunakan rim lelidi.
Rim sport adalah lebih teguh dalam menghadapi keadaan jalan yang kurang memuaskan kerana ia tidak mudah bengkok.

8)Tukar ekzos kuasa tinggi
SAYA memiliki sebuah motosikal Yamaha TZM 150cc. Bolehkan saya menukar ekzos motosikal saya kepada ekzos berkuasa lebih tinggi, contohnya motosikal berkuasa 250cc ke atas.
Saya ingin ekzos motosikal saya berbunyi lebih senyap seperti motosikal berkuasa tinggi.

JAWAPAN
EKZOS yang terlalu lawas menyebabkan kehilangan kuasa kerana sedikit penampanan gas ekzos adalah perlu untuk mendapatkan baki campuran bahan api optimum.
Ekzos yang terlalu lawas menyebabkan tekanan rendah yang akan menggalakkan pembebasan campuran bahan api masuk ke kebuk pembakaran terutama bagi enjin dua lejang yang tidak menggunakan injap mampatan, walaupun TZM menggunakan injap powervalve.
Malah, fungsi powervalve ini juga untuk mengawal kelawasan ekzos, pada saiz ekzos standard. Ada kemungkinan jika saiz ekzos ditukar, pelarasan semula mungkin tidak dapat menepati hasil dikehendaki.

9)Kurang kuasa lepas buka kotak udara
SAYA menunggang motosikal Yamaha Lagenda (2002) yang pernah kemalangan pada 2003 dan sudah dibaiki sepenuhnya.
Masalahnya, selepas membuka kotak udara, motosikal saya kurang dari segi kuasa. Untuk pengetahuan pihak tuan, saya menggunakan sporket 14 33. Apakah masalah sebenar motosikal saya?

Jawapan:
PEMBUKAAN atau pembuangan penapis dalam kotak udara sebenarnya satu amalan yang tidak digalakkan. Kajian menunjukkan udara kotor boleh menyumbang sehingga 60 peratus terhadap kerosakan enjin kerana hanya di sinilah faktor luaran atau pencemaran boleh masuk ke dalam enjin.
Memang boleh didebatkan mengapa motosikal lumba tidak menggunakan penapis udara tetapi perlu diingat keadaan di litar adalah bersih. Ketika Cub Prix di Melaka baru-baru ini trek disiram air oleh Jabatan Bomba untuk membuang habuk dan pasir.
Penggunaan seharian mewajibkan penapis udara digunakan dalam kotak udara. Tanpa menggunakan kotak udara, enjin yang ditala semula dengan baik tentunya dirasakan lebih berkuasa kerana aruhan udara adalah lebih baik.
Namun, habuk yang masuk bersama udara menyebabkan kehausan melampau pada omboh (piston) dan dinding enjin.

10)Enjin hilang kuasa pecut ketika pendikit dipulas mengejut
SAYA memiliki motosikal Suzuki RG Sport 110 tanpa klac tangan. Baru-baru ini saya membuat overhaul pada bahagian blok, omboh (piston), ring, rod, bearing dan klac plate.
Ketika memecut atau dalam kedudukan gear satu apakah penyebab enjin seakan-akan menjadi berat (bunyi dari ekzos kuat tetapi daya pecutan meleret) ketika pendikit dipulas secara mengejut?
Adakah ini normal bagi RG tanpa klac tangan? Ketika pendikit dipulas seperti biasa ketika memecut (memberi ruang kelegaan antara kemasukan gear dan memulas pendikit) bunyi dari ekzos dan daya pecutan normal. Apakah ini berpunca dari karburetor?
Adakah setiap kali 'potong blok' maka minjet dan pilotjet pada karburetor harus ditukar? Saya sekarang menggunakan piston bersaiz 50. Dimaklumkan saiz asal piston adalah 20 dan motosikal saya sudah dua kali menjalani overhaul pada blok. Apakah saiz minjet dan pilotjet yang disarankan bagi omboh bersaiz 50?

ADA kemungkinan spring klac yang ditukar lembut menyebabkan ia mencengkam lambat apabila kuasa hantaran dari enjin (dengan rpm tinggi) adalah kuat. Ini kadangkala terjadi dengan penggunaan minyak pelincir yang tidak betul yang menyebabkan terjadinya kelucutan klac (clutch-slip).
Karburetor yang mampu meningkatkan rpm enjin apabila pendikit dipulas selalunya tidak mendatangkan masalah. Periksa kembali alat ganti digunakan adalah tulen.
Baik pulih blok dan piston dengan pembesaran (re-bore) secara mudahnya jarang memerlukan penukaran jejarum atau jetting.
Cukup sekadar menaikkan jarum utama dalam karburetor, yang boleh dilaras ketinggiannya untuk membenarkan lebih bahanapi masuk selaras dengan pembesaran sesaran enjin.
Bagaimanapun, pelarasan atau penukaran jetting yang dibuat teliti mekanik berpengalaman mampu memaksimum kecekapan perjalanan enjin dengan mendapatkan campuran bahanapi yang tepat bagi semua julat kuasa enjin dan ada ketikanya lebih menjimatkan penggunaan bahan api.

11)Boleh guna brek cakera
SAYA pengguna motosikal jenis Honda EX5. Adakah salah dari segi undang-undang menggunakan brek cakera depan dan belakang?

JAWAPAN
PADA ukuran amnya penggunaan peralatan yang meningkatkan tahap keselamatan motosikal dibenarkan dengan syarat pengubahsuaian dibuat secara sempurna menggunakan alat ganti yang direka khusus untuk pengubahsuaian berkenaan.
Brek cakera memberikan kuasa hentian jauh lebih baik daripada brek gelendung (dram) dan sebab ia tidak dipasang sebagai ciri standard kerana faktor kos untuk mengurangkan harga motosikal. Sekiranya gaya tunggangan anda pantas dan berkelajuan tinggi, eloklah dipertimbangkan penggunaan brek cakera.

You only need to consider one point - which engine will last longer.

Things like clutch and tacho are just nice to have lar but not important.
125z works without the clutch also means it's a cheating wan. As for
tacho, no need lar - learn to listen to your engine. Also, 135lc should have higher resale value also.

Too dab suzuki FX125 not sold anymore. Got manual 5 speed box and powerfull
too.
I have owned an LC135 since 20 April (first batch, from Thailand). In
Ipoh you can get it in 3 days. So far so good, no problem at all. Mine
green colour, full accessories (must add another RM300).
Compare to my friend's 125Z, FC are good wether in long or short
distance. Average speed 70-80km/h. Top speed until today 130km/h but dont
want to push it further, still new maa... . Choosed it because of
reliability issue for 2 stroke engine (FC, maintenance..bla..bla...).
But it depends on what riding habit we have. Some people love speeding,
than 125Z is better. For others like me who opt for FC and low
maintenance, just go for LC135, you won't regret..
There are pros and cons on both engine. Here are some.
For 4 stroke:
Pros
1) Good FC, since the engine use only petrol and 4T oil (seldomly change)
2) Cleaner engine (no visible smoke; unless engine faulty)
3) Low noise (standard exhaust pipe only, no mods - from factory)
4) Power when climbing steep hill
5) Durable for long distance non stop (no engine jammed problem)

Cons
1) Vibration (especially for single piston like cubchai)
2) Repairing cost (lots of mechanical stuff / moving parts, but it won't
be a problem if you maintain your bikes well and according to service
booklet)
3) Less power when compared with 2 stroke engine (except hilly roads)

For 2 stroke:
Pros
1) High end power compare to 4 stroke
2) Simple engine components, even you can maintain it yourself (repairing
cost low but... see the cons below)
3) Very slight vibration compared with 4 strokes
4) High speed compare with 4 stroke

Cons
1) FC not so good, also need 2T oil (more RM)
2) Visible smoke, in long term (even if you maintain your bikes well)
3) Always need to clean the engine parts (including exhaust pipe) to
prevent carbon build up that causing power loss & high FC
4) Must be very careful during full throttle or long distance, if the
carburator fuel mixture (petrol + 2T) are not right, the engine will
jammed)

For 135LC, by adding RM300, you can get:
1) Nice head cowling (like 125Z)
2) Air intake housing
3) Extra side cowling, your motorcycle looks more attractive
4) 'V' shaped plastic(don't know what they call it) in front of your bike
4-stroke can save petrol & $$$.
-For 2-stroke you need to check the 2T level regularly to make sure
it hasn't dropped too low.
-While pouring 2T you have to be careful not to spill it on the sides of the
2T tank or kena your long-sleeve t-shirt.
-I'm basically too lazy to do that...hahaha...that's why I'm a 4-stroke guy.
The 135 is quite an incredible kap-chai, I saw one guy on the highway
tah-pau basically everyone (trailers, cars & other kap-chais) on the fast
lane.
-The engine sounds good too, a kind of powerful whirring sound that is
pleasing too hear.

Jawapan:
Sebenarnya kedua-dua model Yamaha 135LC ini menggunakan klac dan yang membezakannya ialah cara kawalan klac berkenaan digerakkan.

Fungsi klac menghubungkan enjin dengan kotak gear. Model awal menggunakan klac automatik yang digerakkan daya emparan apabila putaran enjin meningkat dan daya ini menyebabkan plet klac terhubung dan seterusnya menggerakkan gear, sproket dan terus ke rantai serta tayar.

Bagi model terkini yang menggunakan kawalan manual atau kawalan tangan dan kadangkala digelar klac mati (kerana enjin mati jika klac tersalah lepas), kawalan klac dihantar melalui tuil tangan yang menggerakkan rumah klac.

Rumah ini mengandungi plet klac yang ditekan spring dan apabila ia ditarik, plet ini terpisah serta membebaskan pusingan enjin dari kotak gear.

Dalam keadaan gear neutral, syaf terhubung dengan sistem klac bebas berpusing dengan tiada bebanan, jadi enjin tidak mati.

Manakala apabila gear dimasukkan, syaf terhubung dengan gear dan sistem penghantaran akhir. Apabila klac ditarik, plet klac terpisah dan enjin berputar bebas, gear dimasukkan tidak akan terhubung sehingga klac dilepaskan dan plet klac bergesel dengan plet pengantar sedikit demi sedikit sehingga klac dilepaskan sepenuhnya.

Ini yang menghasilkan kawalan kuasa enjin kepada penunggang. Klac manual ini memberikan lebih kawalan kepada penunggang dan selalunya lebih digemari mereka yang inginkan kawalan kuasa lebih baik berbanding klac auto.

4-valve water-cooled engine - The 4-valve engine configuration provides better volumetric efficiency compared with other 4-stroke moped models which uses 2-valve engine design, enabling the engine to produce higher torque at high rpm. However, the engine displacement of 135cc limits the ability of air-cooling system while retaining the small kapchai design at the same time, therefore water-cooling system which has better cooling efficiency is used.
Carburetor with throttle position sensor and accelerator pump - The Y135LC uses Mikuni VM22 carburetor equipped with throttle position sensor for more precise ignition timing, increasing the engine's efficiency, and also an accelerator pump for better acceleration and instant response during take-off.
Catalytic converter - Even though most 4-stroke kapchai models are capable to surpass strict emission standards without even using the catalytic converters, Yamaha has taken an initiative to install a catalytic converter to the Y135LC to surpass even stricter emission standards in the future.

The Yamaha Y135LC debuted in 2005 for Thai and Indonesian market before brought in Malaysian market in February 2006. The Y135LC was designed by the headquarters of Yamaha Motor Company in Japan for Asean market. The model was very successful in Southeast Asia especially in Malaysia.

To promote the Y135LC, Yamaha organized an Asean road tour known as the Yamaha Pan Asean Tour, traveling 9,000 km on roads in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines, which ended on May 2006.

New Saga by Proton

Proton Edar now officially accepting the pre-booking of the new Proton Saga 2008. The booking fee is RM500, but now still don't have any official image and spec from Proton in the website yet only some sample color to choose. According to the news reported new Saga will be in the price range between RM 30,000 to RM 35,000 for 1.3l 4door sedan model.

The official teaser below shows the car’s key styling details, and one difference from the models we’ve seen in spyshots are that the rear lamp cluster now has an orange signal indicator lense instead of a clear lense.

The Malaysian, New Toyota Camry was recently launched into the market, fully imported from Thailand. The New Model looks bolder, sophisticated and much more aggressive than its predecessors. This time around it doesn’t look that conservative in the eyes of the users. Currently its taking the bulk of the market share amongst it’s competitors.

I personally feel, the New Camry is a class above the rest. It combines both modern elements and high end finishing. After years of being in the Motor Industry, i can safely say that the New Camry is a vehicle that sets a new global standard.

The first thing you would notice in this sixth generation Camry would be it’s stylish and balanced design. Interiors are covered with leather and wood grain trims gives you the sense of prestige(2.0G & 2.4V). Seating inside one of this units will give anyone the feeling of ’spaciousness’ due to its long cabin. Feedback from the people I’ve met also say that they are happy that the New Camry features an all new, plasma cluster air-conditioning system (provides refreshing ions, reduces airborne micro organisms, contaminants and odour particles) with Dual control ability (one temperature for the driver and another temperature for the front passenger) & what more, they get to control all this together with the Audio and Multi Info Display (MID) all at the touch of a button on the steering wheel. Now that is what we call, Innovations of the future.

Even during the earlier models, Camry’s usually do very well, in terms of their sale. I would think it’s mainly due to it’s reliable engines. The New Camry currently comes with two engines, the first one being the 2.0 litre 1AZ-FE and the other being the 2.4 litre 2AZ-FE. Both are 4 cylinder DOHC 16valve engines. It also features the ever so popular Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence which gives the car that vroom power. It is also noted that power and torque for both the engines are amongst the best in its class.

Driving this ‘dream machine’ is such a pleasurable experience. Currently the New 2.4V Camry comes fitted with a new 5 speed Super ECT automatic transmission, it also gives the driver the option of manual sequential shifts when required. However the 2.0E & G has only a 4 speed Super ECT automatic transmission in them.

Needless to say about Toyota’s safety standards, this car comes fitted with the highest level of Active and Passive safety needed in a car.

So try not to be the average Joe when you buy that new car, the accessory shop is where they would go. Remember when you go out shopping for all those extra accessory gadgets, check your warranty first, as not to infringe them. All Toyota vehicles as I know, come with a 3 year or 100,000km (whichever comes first) warranty.

Driving this car around town will definitely get you the looks, if you know what i mean…

‘Forza’ is a popular Italian word which is often used as a cheer to inspire sportsmen, sort of like ‘Charge’ or ‘Go’. Because it is an emotional term, it has also been chosen by Ferrari for its magazine and by Microsoft for a motorsports simulator. Now Naza Corporation has also chosen it as the new name for the upgraded Sutera. In the words of Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Utama SM Nasimuddin SM Amin, Chairman and CEO of the Naza Group, the name suggests ‘a forward move by Naza after the Sutera’.

Officially launched this morning, the Forza is a renamed Sutera, the first entry-level hatchback which Naza introduced less than a year ago. However, it is more than a mere name-change as there are said to be a significant number of changes made to the car. It’s no secret that the Sutera was a model cloned from the Lobo developed by Hafei, a manufacturer in China. Relying on parts from Hafei initially, Naza found that the quality of the imported parts was not high enough and paid a lot of attention to customer feedback and was pro-active in replacing those parts which were not up the standard. This was only a short-term situation as the objective from the start was to localise as many parts as possible and with the Forza, up to 73% of the car is now from Malaysian suppliers.

Additionally, as a demonstration of its confidence in the higher quality of the car, Naza is offering a 3-year warranty along with 2 years of free servicing at authorised Naza service centres.

The overall shape of the Forza is the same as the Sutera, retaining the sharp angles that were penned by Italy’s Pininfarina (which is also the studio responsible for the designs of Ferraris). The obvious changes on the exterior are new headlamps, larger rear lamps, repositioning of the reversing lights to the bumper, and a new 6-spoke design for the 14-inch alloy rims which are shod with 165/55 tyres.

Inside, the Forza gets a new Blaupunkt audio system which is MP3-compatible and delivers music through six speakers. The instrument panel has also been revised a bit to improve clarity while the fabric trim and colour themes have also been changed to give a sportier ambience. Convenience features include front power windows, electrically-adjustable door mirrors and central locking.

The technical changes are not specified by Naza although it is said that ‘the engineers have ensured that the car has key improvements to provide the keen driver with an enjoyable time behind the wheel’. Presumably, these improvements have been made after reviewing feedback from many of the 6,000 Sutera customers.

For those who may have forgotten the under-bonnet specifications of the car, it has a 1075 cc 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve petrol engine with EFI. The power output is 48 kW/65.2 bhp at 57000 rpm and 88 Nm of torque at between 3000 and 3500 rpm. Only a 5-speed manual transmission is available.

Safety features are praiseworthy for a car of this price class with dual front airbags as standard and a laminated windscreen which will not shatter into a million pieces when hit by a stone ( a crack may form in some cases). Front and rear occupants get seatbelts with the outer two at the rear having the 3-point inertia-reel type. For parents’ peace of mind, the Forza can be turned into a ‘2-door car’ by activating the childproof rear door locks which prevent the doors from being opened from the inside even when they are not locked.

Priced at RM37,999, inclusive of insurance, the Forza has a choice of six body colours – Fusion (a lime green colour), Amber, Gun Metal, Atlantic, Onyx and Satin. A Sportivo version is also available for RM42,288 and this comes with a bodykit, 15-inch wheels, an entertainment system, leather upholstery as well as other accessories.

Recall for Proton Gen2/Satria Neo jacks

Proton has announced a recall of wheel jacks supplied with the Gen2 and Satria Neo after routine tests conducted on a batch of jacks for the models revealed some inconsistencies in the quality of the item which is used to raise the car to replace a puncture tyre (some people actually don’t know that!).

“Proton has time and again stated our commitment towards our customers in terms of product and service quality. Their safety and satisfaction is of paramount importance to us. As such, despite the fact that only selected jacks are affected, Proton is not treating this matter lightly as it involves the safety of our customers. Even though there have been no incidents reported in relation to this, Proton has taken the initiative to recall the jacks and replace them with new ones,” said the company’s Managing Director Dato' Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

Only models with jacks in bronze and gold-like colours are being recalled and were supplied with the Gen2s since January 2004 and the Satria Neos sold since April 2006. The models with jacks which are blue in colour are said to have no quality issues and therefore do not require replacement.

Owners of the models with the jacks described are requested to bring their jacks and their vehicle registration card to any authorized Proton service branches and selected Proton service dealers for a free replacement. Hopefully Proton will be flexible enough to provide the replacement in the event the registration card cannot be furnished as some banks retain the document using the tenure of the hire-purchase loan.

Owners who are unsure of the status of their jacks or require further clarification can contact Proton i.Care at 1300-880-888.

The recall announcement certainly marks a change at Proton as it has usually avoided making public announcements of this nature, perhaps due to the belief that such recalls would serve to reinforce public belief that Proton quality levels are poor. However, consumers would generally feel more assured that a manufacturer is pro-active in recalling a product because it shows that the manufacturer cares about the safety of its customers.

While critics may choose to use this recall as further evidence of Proton’s poor quality, the company would probably find that it ‘wins points’ with most owners for showing that it too can have some defects in its products and is willing to admit it, unlike in the past when quality issues were dismissed as 'irrelevant' and the management refused to make public recalls (quietly changing defective parts only when owners came in for servicing). After all, if even Toyota’s Lexus division – which boasts the highest quality in the world – acknowledges defects and announces recalls, why should Proton not be willing to do so?

New TSI Engine From Volkswagen

In these days of high fuel prices, and the prospect of yet even higher prices in the immediate future, the car buyer is more than likely to be interested in vehicles that can provide better fuel efficiency, and better still, vehicles that offer fuel economy without any sacrifice to the power output.

Volkswagen Group may have hit the jackpot with their latest engine, the TSI, that uses a combination of a supercharger and turbocharger. The idea of a supercharger and turbocharger combination is not new. Those who are old enough may recall the Nissan March super-turbo, introduced in the early nineteen eighties. The result was a potent little car that went like stink, and it even made the world rally scene. Some of us remember Per Ekland and his March Super-turbo flying through the special stages in the Rally of Malaysia.

There was a small difference, however, and that was the fact that at that time, the development objective was to generate more power from an engine, not fuel economy.

Today, the TSI is Volkswagen’s version of the supercharger-turbocharger engine. This time, the idea is to make an engine of smaller capacity more powerful, especially at take-off, and then when it is running, maintain high torque characteristics to keep the vehicle going. Underlying all this was the aim to improve overall fuel consumption, and reducing the absolute engine capacity for a given size of vehicle, again in the interests of reducing fuel consumption.

Having a small engine is the first step towards improving fuel economy, but this always comes along with the lack of power, therefore restricting the maximum weight of the vehicle. The paradigm was always, small car, small engine, and large car, large engine. The TSI engine has specific characteristics that now allow a large car to be fitted with a small engine. QED.

Following the success of their Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) engines that have been successfully utilized in many of their current models, Volkswagen introduced the TSI engine, the world’s first direct injection twin-charger, gasoline engine, designed to not only producing optimum horsepower and driving pleasure but at the same time managing fuel costs efficiently.

Dr Hermann Middendorf, Head of Development Department, Volkswagen’s TSI expert from Germany, presented an overview of the TSI technology and the superiority of TSI over conventional gasoline engines.

The TSI engine uses a modified injection technique, in which a multi-hole high-pressure injection valve with six fuel exit openings is used. Similar to the FSI system, the injector is located on the entry side between the entry canal and cylinder head gasket level. The amount of fuel to be injected requires a high spread in the flow-through amount; hence the maximum pressure is increased to 150 bar, and the engine runs a compression ratio of 10:1.

Although it has a relatively small capacity of only 1.4 litres, the TSI produces an incredible maximum torque of 240 Newton metres, available from 1500 rpm to 4750 rpm. Absolute horsepower is 125kW / 170PS horsepower, a performance level easily matching a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated engine, and a top of the range TSI engine can outperform a 2.5 liter engine with ease.

Winning the “Best New Engine” at the 2007 and 2006 International Engine of the Year awards, one of the most sought-after automotive accolades, the TSI engine has a supercharger which is belt driven, will supply boost pressure from off-idle, to increase the torque during low RPM engine speeds, and a the turbocharger that comes to life at the higher RPM range, effectively running dual forced induction mechanisms. Turbochargers need high revolutions to ‘spool’ up before they become effective, and this makes them not so effective at lower engine revolutions. A supercharger, being mechanically driven, does not suffer any lag, and is able to provide power instantly for the initial take-off. At higher engine revolutions, the supercharger begins to lose its effectiveness, due to the drag caused by its mechanical drive, and is electronically disengaged, allowing the turbo to take over the work.

To achieve a seamless transfer from the supercharger to the turbocharger, the TSI diverts pressurized air from the supercharger into the turbocharger to ‘kick start’ it every time there is a switchover. This process is continuous and a sealed clutch is used to switch the supercharger on and off when necessary.

All the power aside, the main attraction of the TSI engine is its fuel economy. The 1.4 TSI engine’s fuel consumption averages around 7.8 litres / 100km (12.8km/ litre), whereas a conventional 2.0 liter engine, averages a significantly higher consumption of 9.7 liter/ 100km (10.3 km/ liter). This comparison with a 2.0 litre engine is by virtue of the fact that he 1.4 litre TSI has roughly the same power as a 2.0 litre engine.

The TSI is more environmental friendly. CO2 emissions have been significantly reduced and are comparable to an engine of lesser output. The TSI engine manages to reduce CO2 emissions from 161g/km to 149g/km, making it more environmentally compliant than its peers.

The Volkswagen TSI engine is available in the Golf, Jetta and Touran models in Europe. More than 41,000 Volkswagen vehicles fitted with the TSI engine were sold in a short period of less than a year. The new Tiguan has also started with a version of the TSI engine. Even as we pen this article, a natural-gas powered TSI is being tested on board a Passat – a reflection of the great potential of this unique new economical and “torquey" engine generation.

This TSI is one engine that is worth a second look, and Malaysians will see it in 2008 in the Touran, due to come here, and later on in the Tiguan.

8000 Bookings for Proton Persona

Persona, the newborn in the PROTON stable, has received a better than expected response from consumers with over 8,000 bookings since PROTON began marketing the sedan.

We aim to make Chevrolet a leading brand in Malaysia, and are committed to deliver on our promise of quality and value, continue to improve on our network quality as well as to introduce new products to suit local market, said Ms. Wisadkosin.

Looks aside, and the Captiva looks great, it’s first advantage would be the fact that it is a seven-seater, with comfortable leather seats that split, fold and tumble over in numerous configurations, giving it great versatility. With ABS, Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), Active Roll-over Protection, and Descent Control system, and Active 4WD that gives the Captiva 100 percent drive to the front when going straight ahead, engages 4Wd automatically and splits the torque 50:50 between front and rear axles, the Captiva, at least on paper, presents a great bang-for-your-buck package that is hard to refuse. Other accessories are headlamp cleaners and a rain sensor.

Buyers of the Captiva have a choice of a 136 horsepower, 2.4 litre gasoline engine, or a 150 horsepower, 2.0 litre common rail diesel turbo engine. Both the Captiva models are available in 2WD and 4WD. Prices range from RM136k to RM150k.

Once you have purchased and souped it up, go to the Power and Speed Icon in the top right corner of the map. Select "Driving Park". Then, select MAX Top Speed Challenge to the right, but go backwards on the track. After the loading screen, go to settings (little tool box). Equip and set the following: Tires R5, Nitrous (set the value to 50), Turbine Kit (Stage 4), Suspension (Racing); set the spring rate and the ride height to the lowest possible value (4.0) and (55) respectively; full Customizable Transmission (set the final gear to a value of 3.000) and the (Auto to 25), Driving Aids, (set all three to 0), Down Force (set front to 38 and rear to 88); and leave everything else stock. When you enter the track, accelerate as usual, but go backwards. Wait until you are on the back stretch to use the nitrous to get it over 360 mph and into a wheelie. -Hint: Drifting: With a 4x4, you must enter a corner at a fast speed and exit either faster or slower. With FR, MR, or RR you must enter the corner at a moderate speed but exit faster than you entered. Also, for better performance set your Drift or 4x4 for front wheels to 50.

-Hint: Better handling: When racing on tracks with a lot of turns and twists, use the nitrous while turning. Your car should handle a lot better.

-Hint: Missions Hall: Skyline GT-R Test course: There are five opposing Skyline GTRs on the track. Straight at the start of the race, make sure you stay directly behind the GTR in front of you. It will block the wind and make you go faster, making it easier to catch up. When you enter the first turn, they will slow down. Go to the outside of the turn and pass them from the outside. You will then see the red GTR in the front. Keep going as fast as you can and hit it at full speed. You will get a five second penalty, but it will not bother you much. Hitting the red GTR will send it ahead of the pack. When the penalty is gone, get behind it and catch up to it, but do not pass it. Instead, get behind it and "push" it. Stay directly behind it all along the three laps. In the straights you should be able to reach 275km/h. Upon entering the very last turn of the race, go to the inside before the red GTR brakes, and stay to the inside of the turn. Do not go where it is flat; stay in the bent. Near the end of the last turn, you should be close enough. Get behind the yellow GTR and you should be able to catch up to it before crossing the finish line. This test is very difficult and may require a few attempts.
-Hint: Speed up B-Spec races: While in a B-Spec mode race, press R1 to switch to "Race Monitor". Hold L1 + D-pad Right and you can make the race go up to three times faster. The only downside is that you must stay on the Race Monitor screen in order to keep the race speed up. It will switch back to 1x speed when you go to "Broadcast View" mode.

-Hint: Recommended modifications: The first mod that should done to any vehicle is a spoiler kit in the GT Auto department. They cost 1,200 credits and give the greatest value for the money. Choose the ones to the far right, as they have the greatest downforce characteristics. Most cars can get a kit installed. Save money and do not purchase a Stage 3 NA kit and a supercharger, as they cannot be installed at the same time. Also, when going for the turbo upgrades, look for a fifth kit called " Original". This is usually cheaper than Stage 4. If you have the money to get this straight away, it is better to do this first, as it does the job of Stages 1 to 3 combined, and then some. A recommended strategy for a broad spectrum of cars is (in order): spoiler, full custom gearbox, computer chip, full custom suspension, NOS, race exhaust, then start on the engines.

-Hint: Special rims: The "Today's Special Rims" rotate every thirty game days. There are thirty different sets of rims. There are 439 total "Today's Special Rims". If you see a set you like, you will only see them every twenty nine game days -- buy them while you can.

-Hint: Extra horsepower: Give your brand new car an oil change immediately when you get it (before driving it). It will usually gain between 5 to 30 hp. Remain in current gear with automatic transmissions: When racing with an automatic transmission, hold R2 to force the car to remain in the current gear. Release R2 when the small red light to change gears flashes or the car will not change gears. This useful for remaining at a given speed through a corner, or stretching the top end of a gear for a little extra speed or performance.

In addition to our cover story focusing on secondhand cars, here’s a list of documents required in order to facilitate the ownership transfer. If you’re thinking of selling or buying, pay attention! These lists could save you a whole lot of running around.

Under Section 13(1) Road Transport Act 1987, transfer of ownership must be submitted to the respective state’s RTD Director within 7 days from the date of transaction. Failing which, the seller and buyer will be subjected to a fine of not more than RM1,000 or not more than 3 months imprisonment for the first offence. For consecutive offences, both will be subjected to a fine of not more than RM2,000 or not more than 6 months imprisonment, or both.

When selling a vehicle, the seller, as the registered owner of the vehicle, must inform the respective state’s RTD Director by completing Part A of JPJK3 Form. The JPJK3 Form should then be handed over to the buyer together with the following documents:

Photocopy of National Identity Card for Malaysians or International Passport for non-Malaysias.

The Case For Diesel

The Basics of Diesel Technology Diesel engines have long proven to be a reliable, economical and durable source of power for many applications. Diesel engines work on a different platform than petrol or other technologies, relying on compression instead of spark to ignite a mixture of air and diesel fuel. The mixture of air and fuel is constantly changed to directly respond to the load placed on the engine. For this reason, diesel technology is ideal for commercial applications because of its ability to provide performance and power that is efficient, economical, durable, and reliable.

Diesel Fuel Characteristics
1. More energy - diesel fuel contains more energy per unit volume than petrol
2. Safer - the less volatile diesel has a higher flash point and is far less likely to ignite or explode if spilled or released
3. Better Fuel Economy up to 45% to 60% better fuel economy can be achieved when combined with the more efficient combustion process of the diesel engine.

Environmental impact
The environmental performance of diesel engines is one of continuous improvement. Significant advances in diesel engine technology have resulted in considerable improvements in diesel emissions. Because of the greater efficiency of diesel engines and the significant fuel economy advantage, diesel engines emit 30 - 35 per cent fewer carbon emissions than petrol. This is good news because the effects of carbon-based greenhouse gasses emission on the global climate and temperature patterns are an increasing concern.

Decrease in Total Overall Emissions
The US has reported an overall decrease in diesel emissions over the past 10 years, resulting largely from the rapid development of diesel technology and diesel engine technology.

1. On-Road Diesel Engines:
- Total NOx emissions from on-road diesels dropped by 25% (oxides of nitrogen)
- Total S02 emissions from on-road diesels dropped by 76% (sulfure dioxide)
- Total PM-10 emissions from on-road diesels dropped by 37% (coarse particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter)
- Total PM-2.5 emissions from on-road diesels have dropped by 35% (fine particulates smaller than 2:5 micrometers in diameter)

2. Off-Road Diesel Engines:
- 25% reduction in particulate emissions from off-road diesels over the last 25 years

The Diesel Engine
Diesel engines are workhorse engines, powering heavy-duty trucks, buses, tractors, trains, large ships, bulldozers, cranes, and other construction equipment. The diesel engine's image as a muscle-bound monster has now given way to vastly improved engines that delivers more fuel, efficiency, more fuel flexibility, and cleaner emissions.

How Diesel Engines Work
A diesel is an internal combustion engine that converts chemical energy in fuel to mechanical energy that moves pistons up and down inside enclosed spaces called cylinders. The pistons are connected to the engine's crankshaft, which " changes their linear motion into the rotary motion needed to propel the vehicle's wheels. Energy is released in a series of small explosions' as fuel reacts chemically with oxygen from the air. This is where diesel and gasoline differs.

Gasoline engines start the explosions with sparks from spark plugs. In diesel engines, fuel ignites on its own.

Air heats up when it is compressed. This fact led German engineer Rudolf Diesel to theorize that fuel could be made to ignite spontaneously if the air inside an engine's cylinders became hot enough through compressions. Achieving high temperatures meant producing much greater air compression than occurs in gasoline engines. High compressions could lead to high engine efficiency. Part of the reason is that compressing air concentrates fuel-burning oxygen. A fuel that has high energy content per gallon, such as diesel for example, will react with most of the concentrated oxygen to deliver more power per explosion when injected into the engine's cylinders at exactly the right time.

These calculations proved to be correct. Consequently, even though vast improvements have been made on diesel engines over the years, the basic concept of the 4-stroke diesel engine is still unchanged. The first stroke involves drawing air into a cylinder as the piston creates space for it by moving away front the intake valve. The piston's subsequent upward swing then compresses the air, heating it at the same time. Next, fuel is injected under high pressure as the piston approaches the top of its compression stroke, igniting spontaneously as it contacts the heated air.

The hot combustion gasses expand, driving the piston downward in what is called the power stroke. During its return swing, the piston pushes spent gases from the cylinder, and the cycle begins again with an intake of fresh air.

How Diesel Engines Have Improved
Older diesel engines mixed fuel and air in a pre- combustion chamber before injecting it into a cylinder. The mixing and injection steps were controlled mechanically, which made it very difficult to tailor the fuel-air mixture to changing engine conditions. This led to incomplete fuel combustion, particularly at low speeds. As a result, fuel was wasted and tailpipe emissions were relatively high.

Today's diesels inject fuel directly into an engine's cylinders using tiny computers to deliver precisely the right amount of fuel the instant it is needed. All functions in a modern diesel engine are controlled an electronic control module that communicates with an elaborate array of sensors placed at strategic locations throughout the engine to monitor everything from engine speed to coolant and oil temperatures and even piston positions. Tight electronic control means that fuel burns more thoroughly, delivering more power, greater fuel economy and fewer emissions. Modern direct-injection diesel engines producer low amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbons. Emissions of reactive nitrogen compounds (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) have been reduced since 1980. Nevertheless, NOx and PM emissions remain at relatively high levels.

What Improvements Need To Be Made?
Diesel engines are already more efficient than their gasoline counterparts (45% vs. 30%). Further advances (55% to 63%) are possible. Widespread use of diesel engines, particularly in trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles promises to substantially reduce dependence on petroleum products.

Permohonan Pengecualian Khas Pemasangan Cermin Gelap

Kaedah 5(1) dan Kaedah 5(3) Kaedah-kaedah kenderaan motor larangan mengenai jenis-jenis kaca tertentu pindaan 2000 menetapkan cermin depan hendaklah telus cahaya tidak kurang 70% manakala cermin belakang dan tepi hendaklah telus cahaya tidak kurang 50%.

Pengecualian Khas Cermin Gelap
Pemasangan kaca gelap diberikan kepadan orang-orang tertentu sahaja seperti di bawah Kaedah 11(a) dan 11(b) Kaedah-kaedah Kenderaan Motor Larangan Mengenai Jenis-jenis Kaca Tertentu 1991.
Mana-mana orang yang tidak termasuk dalam Kaedah 11(a) dan 11(b) yang menghadapi masalah kesihatan kulit terdedah atau dengan ancaman keselamatan boleh memohon pengecualian khas untuk pemasangan cermin gelap.

Cara-cara Memohon
Pemohonan hendaklah dibuat menggunakan Borang Khas CGI yang boleh didapati daripada Ibu Pejabat JPJ di Putrajaya. Semua permohonan perlu disertakan dengan dokumen-dokumen berikut:

Salinan Kad Pengenalan yang telah disahkan.
Surat Pengesahan daripada Pegawai Perubatan Kerajaan serta rekod-rekod perubatan yang terkini.
Bagi permohonan untuk tujuan keselamatan, sertakan dokumen sokongan.

Kelulusan
Semua permohonan akan dipertimbangkan dan akan dikemukakan kepada Ketua Pengarah Pengangkutan untuk persetujuan. Selepas itu, akan dibawa kepada YB Menteri Pengangkutan untuk kelulusan.

Tempoh
Tempoh kelulusan pengguna cermin gelap adalah satu tahun sahaja dan perlu diperbaharui.

Pembaharuan
Permohonan memperbaharui kelulusan cermin gelap hendaklah dibuat 3 bulan sebelum tamat tempoh kelulusan dengan disertakan dokumen berikut:

Borang CGI yang telah diisi dengan lengkap.
Salinan Kad Pengenalan yang telah disahkan.
Surat Pengesahan daripada Pegawai Perubatan Kerajaan serta rekod-rekod perubatan yang terkini.
Salinan Surat Kelulusan dari YB Menteri Pengangkutan.

Penalti
Pemilik atau pemandu kenderaan yang tidak mematuhi kaedah ini akan dikenakan:

Tidak melebihi RM500.00 atau penjara tidak melebihi 2 minggu untuk kesalahan pertama.

What You Need to Know About ABS

Most modern cars/vehicles nowadays are equipped with a lot of safety devices. One of the most important features that one should look for when buying a car/vehicles is anti-lock braking system or better known as ASABS.

WHAT IS ABS?
Not many people know that ABS originated in airplanes; developed to shorten the distance that is necessary for landing. ABS did not appear in road cars until 1966, when Jensen FF installed a system called Maxaret, which was developed by Dunlop.

However, this system only employed electronic sensors to avoid locking the disc brakes instead of employing computers and wheel speed sensors.

ABS is an anti lock braking system that keeps your base brakes from locking up. In vehicles not equipped with ABS, the driver can manually pump the brakes to prevent wheel lock-up. In vehicles equipped with ABS, the driver's foot remains firmly on the brake pedal, allowing the system to automatically pump the brakes.

WHY ABS IS IMPORTANT
ABS allows the driver to maintain directional stability, control over steering, and in some situations, to reduce stopping distances during emergency braking situation, particularly on wet and slippery road surface. Rear wheel ABS prevents wheel lock-up so that your car stays in a straight line. If your car has ABS on all four wheels, you also keep steering control. If you have steering control, it is possible to avoid a crash by steering around hazards if a complete stop cannot be accomplished in time.

Most new car models offer ABS as either standard or optional equipment. To find out whether your car has ABS, you can read your owner's manual, check your instrument panel for an amber ABS indicator light after you turn on the ignition, or when you buy, lease or rent, you can ask your dealer or rental car company.

How to notice that the ABS is working? In many vehicles, drivers may experience a rapid pulsation of the brake pedal - almost as if the brakes are pushing back at you. Sometimes the pedal could suddenly drop. Also, the vales in the ABS controller may make a noise that sounds like grinding or buzzing. However, in some cars you may feel a slight vibration.

What ABS does is similar to a person pumping the brakes. It automatically changes the pressure in the car's brake lines to maintain maximum brake performance just short of locking up the wheels. ABS does this very rapidly with electronics. However, you have to remember that you should not pump your brakes if you have ABS. Just hold your foot firmly on the brakes pedal. It is important not to take your foot off the brake pedal when you hear a noise or feel pulsation, instead, continue to apply firm pressure. Remember you can still steer the car.

ABS systems are all very similar in the way they control brake pressure. However some systems are designed to prevent only the rear wheels from locking up as can be found on some pick-up trucks and sports utility vehicles. Rear-wheel ABS keeps the vehicle from spinning out of control but the driver will not have steering control if the front wheels lock-up. All other ABS systems including those for cars and multi-utility vehicles are designed to keep all four wheels from locking up. Check your owner's manual to see what type of ABS you have.

The demand for four-wheel-drive vehicles as a lifestyle vehicle in Malaysia is increasing every year. Once, people used to associate pick-up vehicle with "construction site" or Thailand. Nowadays, there are a lot of trendy pick-ups running on our road. An example is the Ford Ranger. But, how many of us really know what is a four-wheel-drive system?

There are a few types of four-wheel-drive systems available in the market. They are automatic four-wheel drive system, part-time four-wheel drive system, full time four-wheel drive system and all wheel-drive system.

In automatic four-wheel drive system, when in normal mode, the vehicle travels in two-wheel drive and typically with rear wheels being the driven wheels. A driver can set an "auto 4WD' function with a touch of a button on the dashboard. The vehicle will then decide when to activate and de-activate four-wheel drive.

When the vehicle engages four-wheel drive, it manages to transmit the power; as necessary, to both front and rear wheels or to wheels with the most traction. The driver can also switch to low gear for improve torque in off-road terrain.

An automatic four-wheel drive system requires a centre differential or some kind of viscous coupling or multi-plate clutch, a transfer case, two drives hafts, two axle differentials and two powered axles. An example of an automatic four-wheel drive vehicle is the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Meanwhile, the most basic four-wheel drive system is the part-time four-wheel drive system that is available in many four-wheel drive vehicles. In normal mode, the vehicle travels in two wheel-drive, typically with rear wheels receiving power and pushing along the front. The driver is responsible for engaging and disengaging the four-wheel drive. By activating the four-wheel drive, the power is sent to the front wheels and continues to power the rear as well.

When on off-road terrain, the driver can engage an extra-low gear for improved torque while in four-wheel drive mode. A part-time four-wheel drive system requires a transfer case, two drives hafts, two axle differentials and two powered axle and does not include a centre differential. An example of this vehicle is the Ford Ranger.

A full-time or permanent four wheel drive system has no two- wheel-drive mode. They always operate with power going to all four wheels, so the drive can benefit all the time from four-wheel traction. There is also no way to turn off the four-wheel drive. A full- time four-wheel drive requires a centre differential, transfer case, two driveshafts, two axle differentials and two powered axles. In rough off-road terrain, the drive can engage low range for improved torque. An example of a full-time four-wheel drive vehicle is the Perodua Kembara.

What is natural gas?
Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons found in the ground independently or together with crude oil. Its composition varies (depending on where it is found), but its main component is "Methane"(CH4}. The rest of the gas is made up of varying amounts of other gases like ethane, propane, butane, and heavier hydrocarbons, plus Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, water and traces of other substances. Natural gas is a by product of decaying vegetable matter in underground strata. Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel; it can help improve the quality of air and water; especially when used in place of other; more polluting energy sources.

Malaysia is blessed with abundant natural gas reserves. At 82.5 trillion cubic feet, these reserves are two times the amount of oil, thus there is opportunity to promote and diversify the use of the natural gas not just as a power source in the industrial and utilities sector; but also as an alternative fuel for vehicles. PETRONAS, through its wholly, owned subsidiary, PETRONAS NGV Sdn Bhd , have been making NGV available to Malaysian motorists through its expanding chain of NGV outlets in the Klang Valley and other major urban areas in the country.

What is NGV?
Natural gas can make a significant contribution towards improved air quality in the transportation industry. Natural gas used in vehicles as fuel is commonly known as Natural Gas for Vehicles or NGV There are three types of natural gas vehicles available.

Bi-Fuel NGV Vehicles
Bi-fuel vehicles are vehicles equipped with two fuel systems i.e. one for petrol and one for NGV of which only one is used at anyone time. Most natural gas bi-fuel vehicles are produced by converting petrol (spark ignition engine) vehicles. In this process, an NGV kit is retrofitted as an addition to the existing petrol system. It is a relatively simple operation and can be done within one day by a certified installer.

Dual-Fuel NGV Vehicles
Diesel vehicles cannot be converted to natural gas bi-fuel operation, but it can be converted to dual-fuel operation or converted to 100% dedicated (monogas) natural gas engine. Converting from diesel to dedicated natural gas operation requires major modifications such as adding spark plugs and altering the compression ratio. These changes preclude the engine from running on diesel fuel. In dual-fuel vehicles, two fuel systems are fitted. The difference with bi-fuel vehicles is that in a dual-fuel vehicle both fuel are used simultaneously instead of one at a time. The dual-fuel system is to convert diesel (compression ignition) vehicle to run on a mixture of NGV and diesel. The diesel fuel is used as a pilot ignition to initiate combustion of the NGV in the engine combustion chambers.

Monogas (Dedicated) NGV Vehicles
When a vehicle is designed by the manufacturers to only use natural gas as fuel, the resulting chassis and engine units are better optimized for NGV than is the case for a converted vehicle. The engine will be able to achieve minimal exhaust emissions, low fuel consumption and adequate mechanical power.

In Malaysia, there are about 8,000 natural gas vehicles currently on the road mainly in the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru. Of this, retrofitted bi-fuel vehicles dominate the natural gas vehicle population in Malaysia with majority of the users being city taxis. The number of monogas vehicles available from original equipment manufacturers is still quite small. Transit buses and some other heavy-duty vehicles make up the greater portion of natural gas vehicles produced by the manufacturers. Until manufacturers build more natural gas vehicles on their assembly lines, most will be in the form of conventional vehicles that have been retrofitted with an NGV kit.

How does a Hi-Fuel vehicle operate?
Natural gas is compressed at the refueling station and dispensed into the vehicle through the natural gas filling valve. It then flows into the NGV cylinder located in the boot of the vehicle. When natural gas is selected, gas from the NGV cylinder goes through the NGV supply line and into the regulator. The regulator reduces the gas storage pressure from up to 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi) to approximately atmospheric pressure.

Next the gas goes through the NGV solenoid valve and into the mixer or fuel injectors. Natural gas mixed with air will then flow through the carburetor or fuel injection system and enters the engines combustion chambers. When petrol is selected, the NGV solenoid valve will shut off the NGV system enabling the vehicle to run on petrol. The diagram below shows the various components for the conversion of a petrol car to bi-fuel operation.

Paras cecair penyejuk sentiasa diperiksa dan ditambah jika perlu. Tetapi, jika air perlu ditambah selalu, terdapat kebocoran atau keretakan di dalam sistem peyejuk.

Paras Air Radiator
Tujuan: Mendapatkan cara yang betul bagi tujuan penyelenggaraan sistem penyejuk enjin.

(Flushing Engine Water Jacket):
Kerja ini juga boleh dilakukan dengan 2 cara iaitu pancuran terus atau pancuran terbalik. Sesetengah pembuat kereta berpendapat dengan melakukan pancuran terbalik boleh menyebabkan kerosakan kepada penyendal seals dan beberapa bahagian enjin. Adalah penting sebelum melakukan kerja memancur ini, perlu dirujuk kepada spesifikasi sesebuah kenderaan.

Pancuran Terbalik
Cara-cara dan langkah-langkah:

Tanggalkan larasuhu dahulu (thermostat)
Salurkan senapang pemancur ke bahagian perumah larasuhu tersebut.
Tanggalkan hos masukan yang terdapat pada pam air.
Berikan tekanan air dan biarkan sehingga air bersih yang keluar.

Pancuran Teruk
Cara-cara dan langkah-langkah adalah sama seperti di atas Cuma terbalikkan sahaja arah senapang pemancur pada hos masukan pam air manakala biarkan air mangalir keluar melalui perumah larasuhu.

Memancur Radiator (Flushing Radiator)
Kerja memancur ini perlu dilakukan menggunakan senapang pemancur (flushing gun) agar tekanan air dapat ditinggikan. Kaedah memancur boleh dilakukan dengan 2 cara iaitu pancuran terus dan pancuran terbalik.

Pancuran Terbalik
Cara-cara atau langkah-langkah:

Salurkan muncung senapang pemancur ke bahagian hos bawah radiator (lihat gambrajah).
Manakala hos atas radiator disalurkan keluar.
Perlu diingat dalam melakukan kerja memancur radiator ini, jangan berikan tekanan air yang terlampau tinggi yang boleh mengakibatkan kerosakan pada bahagian dalaman radiator.
Gunakan tekanan sederhana sehingga air yang bersih yang keluar dari hos atas radiator.

Pancuran Terus
Untuk melakukan pancuran terus, cara dan langkah adalah sama seperti yang di atas tetapi arah air pancuran perlu diterbalikkan.

Salur muncung senapang pemancur ke bahagian hos atas radiator manakala hos bawah disalurkan keluar.

Jikalau paras sejuk rendah pada kedua-dua radiator dan penakung, tambahkan penyejuk sehingga leher radiator dan pada penakung pada paras maksima.

Staying Cool

A car's cooling system plays a vital role in keeping your car in road-worthy condition. The reason: a car engine needs to be in optimum working temperature in order to work efficiently. At present, there are 2 types of cooling systems in use:

Air-cooled system
Pros: Easy maintenance. No worries about leaks or forgetting to fill the radiator
Cons: Very noisy.
Liquid-cooled system (the most common). Maintaining a liquid-cooled system requires a lot of work, as the user must check the coolant levels regularly. This is even more important in our climate as Malaysian hot weather tends to put more demands on the cooling system. To be safe, always check the
thermometer meter when you are on the road.

The surest sign of cooling system failure is a fast rising temperature and the consequences will be costly if you continue driving because the engine will overheat and seize.

Common causes of engine overheat:

Negligence
This simply means that the driver has forgotten to check the liquid coolant level before starting off on a long journey.
Prevention: Easy regular maintenance procedures.
Radiator Puncture
The radiator is not exactly a hardy product and can easily be punctured by rocks, stones or even branches that strike your car as you drive. If you are faced with a radiator puncture, do not attempt to drive off for help. The pressure that occurs in the cooling system while the engine is running will cause the liquids to leak and evaporate faster. This will aggravate the problem. It would be advisable to call for help, and have the car towed to the workshop.
Water pump failure
This is another common cause of engine overheat. Rubber parts within a car will fail in time. This includes the rubber hose that connects your car's radiator to the engine. It should be regularly checked for breaks, tears or cracks. Tiny cracks are often the first,.indication that the hose needs to be changed. You should always replace the rubber hose at the first signs of cracking, instead of waiting for the hose to spring a leak. Replacing a rubber hose is a simple job that can be done whenever the car is in the workshop for its regular maintenance service.
At the same time, other rubber parts such as the rubber seal on the radiator cap should also be checked. A leaking radiator cap should be replaced with an original manufacturer's product. This is important because the radiator works in a highly pressurized state. If the pressure is not held with the correct radiator cap, it will continue to leak and you will be faced with recurring cooling problems.
Electric Fan Failure
Another common cause of engine overheat is when the electric fan motor which cools the radiator fails. Like all mechanical parts, it will fail. The only solution is to have it replaced. Mechanical and parts problems like radiator puncture, water pump failure and electric fan failure are very much beyond the driver's control. What you can actively do to avoid any unexpected breakdown caused by a malfunction in your car's cooling system is to ensure that the coolant level is adequate. As always, stick to your car's maintenance schedule and be vigilant about the state of the rubber hoses and seals within the cooling system. It is always a good idea to ask your mechanic to include a check on the cooling system as part of his service.

Clean filters (air, fuel, transmission and oil filters) playa crucial role in ensuring optimum vehicle performance. In addition to grit and dirt which enter the engine and transmission from the air and other factors in the environment, these filters keep out harmful contaminants from condensation, chemical reactions and wear.

Fuel Filter:
Fuel filters may be small but they are a critical part of the fuel delivery system. The injectors in the fuel injection system have small orifices through which fuel is forced under high pressure. This creates an air/fuel mixture as a vapour, which is the best state for combustion and power. Even the tiniest particle of dirt can clog the injector and disable the engine. The fuel filter is designed to avoid this. Fuel injection systems also rely on electric fuel pumps to maintain the necessary pressure. These pumps are generally located in the fuel tank behind the fuel filter. For this reason, a partially clogged filter in the system will have the fuel pump overworking to overcome the restriction. The fuel pumps which fail prematurely are forced to operate under such conditions for a prolonged period of time.
Air Filter:
Air filters keep harmful and abrasive dust and dirt out of the inside of the engine. In today's sophisticated computer-controlled fuel injection system, air filters playa more important role than ever.A clean air filter is absolutely necessary to maintain the delicate balance of air-to-fuel ratio.
Transmission Filter:
The automatic transmission is a giant hydraulic pump that lubricates itself. The fluid follows a predetermined path under hydraulic pressure, creating what is called a 'fluid coupling' or linkup between the engine and the transmission that will propel the car forward. For this to happen, the fluid must be clean and flow freely. This is where the transmission filter plays a major role by keeping the fluid clean of debris such as dirt, sludge and clutch material. If the filter is clogged, the flow of fluid will be inhibited, the pressure lowers, the fluid breaks down, and friction and head build up affecting the performance of the transmission or even causing transmission failure.
Oil Filter:
Oil filters trap dirt, metal filings and sludge, which are all by-products of the internal combustion engine. Without this filter, these contaminants will flow through the engine causing heat, friction and engine failure.

So, when the Taylors leave London, they’ll be conscious that fuel-saving their way across the planet will mean they need to adhere to the following principles:

1. Drive smoothly - Aggressive driving can use as much as a third more fuel than safe driving*. Avoid accelerating or braking too hard and try to keep your steering as smooth as possible.

2. Use higher gears - The higher gear you drive in the lower your engine speed is, which can improve fuel efficiency. So change up a gear whenever you can, without labouring the engine.

3. Tune and service your engine - A well tuned engine can improve fuel economy by up to 4%**, so change your oil and follow your car manufacturer’s recommendation on servicing.

4. Keep your tyres at the right pressure – Correctly inflated tyres are safer and last longer. A tyre that is under inflated by just 1psi can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 3%**. An under or over inflated tyre is also more susceptible to failing.

5. Avoid carrying excess weight – For every extra 100 lbs (45 kg) you carry your fuel efficiency can drop by 1-2%*. So keep your boot or back seat clear of unnecessary items that just add weight to your vehicle.
